Sunset. This has always been my favorite time of the day. During my teenage years, I used to go up to the roof of our independent row-house and spend some “me time”. I used to sink deep into thoughts about my aspirations and my ambitions, while watching the fiery red ball retire for the day behind the palm trees of the neighborhood.
Life has evolved over the years and has become “busy”. But I still do not miss an opportunity to quietly watch a sunset, whether from the comfort of our apartment balcony or while driving or while sipping a cocktail at a beach bar.
In 2016, we planned our Wedding Anniversary holiday in Koh Lanta, a small island dotted with a series of West facing beaches. Needles to say, watching beautiful sunsets featured high on our agenda. We spent 6 nights in Koh Lanta and hence got to witness 6 different sunsets. Each of those had its own character and was beautiful in its own way.
We had planned our Koh Lanta itinerary so that we get to watch the sunset from a new location every day. Here is a feeble attempt to bring to you the six breathtaking sunsets that we witnessed in Koh Lanta.

Day 1: Long Beach / Phra Ae Beach
We found a sweet spot for ourselves at the ThaiMe Out Beach Bar, ordered some beer and cocktails and settled in peace to watch the show. There were several white and black clouds sprinkled over the sky. The constant color riot created on the sky canvas by the sun and the clouds, with anchored boats in a calm sea in the foreground, created for a dramatic sunset.
Day 2: Klong Dao Beach
After spending ~1.5 hours swimming in the sea, we got out of the water, placed our beach mat on the soft powdery sand and lied down in anticipation of yet another dramatic sunset. Unfortunately the clouds ruled over the sun this day. The clouds let the sun peep its rays through them very briefly before the onset of the dusk.
Day 3: Kantiang Bay Beach
Having just received a brief shower, Lanta was covered in clouds. We were almost sure that the clouds would again win over the sun and hence decided not to carry our cameras for our walk along the Kantiang Bay Beach. By the time we walked till the other end of the beach, the clouds started clearing up, giving the sun plenty of space to color the world with its last rays of the day.
Our walk back along the beach was spent in awe watching the water gleam under the soft golden sun rays. I kept cursing myself for daring to predict the weather and not bringing the cameras! We had to be content with some mobile shots of the splendid sunset. As the sun was going down behind the cliff, we checked in to the Why Not Beach Bar to relax for the rest of the evening.
Day 4: Kantiang Bay View Resort, Kantiang Bay
We decided to take it easy by not venturing out of the hotel immediately upon return from our first ever Scuba Dive trip. For our sunset drink, we chose the resto-bar at our resort, Kantiang Bay View Resort. The bar was strategically located on a hilltop offering two beautiful views – on our left, that of the swimming pool and the sea beyond, and on our right, that of a cliff, behind which the sun hides with an outline of Koh Haa in its background.
Day 5: Klong Nin Beach
After driving through the entire island for the whole day, we decided to take a dip in the water at Klong Nin Beach around sunset. The colors on the sky were not as dramatic as the previous days. Still, watching the sun and its surrounding splash of orange color, was a treat to the eyes.
Day 6: Koh Maa / Andaman Sea
We were on-board the Kon Tiki Lanta, our boat for the day’s Snorkeling (both Day & Night) Trip. Standing on the deck, we watched the sun go dim for a while. Then we came downstairs, got ready with our Snorkeling gear and jumped into the sea for our Night Snorkeling session. There are some things that are better experienced than described. The setting orange sun, the calm dark blue sea surface and my eyes behind the snorkeling mask – all in the same plane; it was that moment when I wished again if only my eyes could take photographs!

Another awesome read n eye watering pics… Thank you is what all I can say…
Thank you.
I love sunsets too! And nighttime snorkeling sounds amazing!
It was! We got to see some amazing creatures during the night time snorkeling, including baby sharks! 🙂
These are all so beautiful. I love the way the horizon looks during a sunset. I have to say that my personal favorite from your list is the one from Kantiang Bay Beach. I love the look of the water on the sand and the sun setting over the water.
Thank you Michelle. 🙂 … Yes, we felt that had we carried the DSLR that day, the photographs could have done a better justice to the gorgeous sunset.
Such stunning sunsets. I try to get to tropical islands once a year, this year I’ve not managed it but the pictures just give me wonderlust to go find a little piece of paridise. Beautiful
Go for it Becki! 🙂
BEAUTIFUL post, a good reminder that life is truly good! The sunset over Kantiang Bay looks like a painting. One of the most amazing sunsets I’ve ever seen was in St. Lucia, hope you get the chance to go someday!
Thanks Stephanie. We have not been to St. Lucia yet – thank you for the recommendation. Would love to visit this Caribbean country some day. ?
I’m not a beach holiday person but I love watching sunsets at the ocean and this seems so idyllic. I love the photo that you took without your camera on the day when the clouds parted.
Thanks Razena! 🙂
